Shoji Hamada, potter

When I was learning pottery, Hamada was THE MAN. From the early part of the last century, he had championed the work of the studio potter, working every day to make a humble and utilitarian piece. Japan has a unique program like our buildings are named national monuments or parks become national parks, a traditional artist
can become a living national treasure.
