le pup and le Lollypop in le snow

I was driving home a minute ago in a snow squall? Do you know what that is? One big cloud dumping snow on you for s short period of time and you can't see the road or the 18 wheeler that wants to eat you for lunch. It is the driving that makes people HATE SNOW. So the cloud passes and the sun comes out, blah blah blah, dreaming of a white Christmas yadda yadda yadda....

It is my wife (Lollypop!) and dog's misfortune to be followed everywhere by ME and MY CAMERA. The shot with the fence shows you the river and the woods behind the house. The road shot? The sunrise was so gorgeous, pink and blue, but I don't seem to have captured it very well....

Snow = blech.

I'm sure you have captured sunrises before but, in this case, it looks as if your camera's light meter took over and compensated for the mixed-lighting situation.

Do you use a point-and-shoot? If so, do you have control over the apertures or not? If you do, you could underexpose this shot by one F stop (e.g., F8 instead of F5.6). That would allow for the colours of the sky to show better but your very tolerant wife would be a mere shadow/silhouette instead of having some dimension to her. If it's a point-and-shoot that you denies you control over the apertures, then you can't do much about this lighting situation. You see, your camera looks at the overall scene and realizes the sky is brighter than the light on your person/dog/main subject. Therefore, it overexposes the background to compensate and give more light to them.

Wow! What a totally long-winded way of saying that capturing the sunrise was probably beyond your control! :o)

Oooh love that banner the rug is so fun! Penny is such a joy. I love the snow, driving in it can be distressing. Especially if other drivers are unprepared!

Have a great day!

As Michelle said, capturing very bright things (or very dark ones, for that matter) is very difficult for poor little camera brains to figure out. Throw in the need to see Mrs. P and Penny and you're out of luck.

Snow is another pain in the behind thing. Camera light meters are calibrated with 18% grey as being ideal. Think Bill Clinton's hair when he was first elected. So, left to its own devices, the meter will set the camera to turn white snow grey and dark colours muddy. P&S cameras very rarely have much in the way of exposure compensation, but if it does, get out there and experiment. :-)

Oh, Michelle missed one thing: snow rocks! ;-)

Argh! Blogger ate my comment! (I seemed to be competing with Gordo and he won the edge)

I'll use my imagination and memory bank for the pink & blue sunrise. I can see the tip of such a sight on the horizon.

Driving in snow is fun if there is no one around (and if you can SEE).

The snow pic in your backyard makes me happy. We had flurries with big flakes, but mostly it is just COLD (wind chill puts us in the mid-20's).....BRrrrrrr.....

it IS a point and shoot and NOBODY should think photography is easy!

We've only had flurries here. Nothing much to speak of. But we know it's coming...........And I love everything about snow except the driving part. I don't even mind the shoveling. Just don't like the driving.

My wife called a bit ago to say it was snowing! Radar shows a bunch of scattered snow showers in the area, but the sun is out where I am. Snow=idiot drivers.
