(Gary Rith and his teaset on display)
The Ithaca Art Trail opening party was last night at State of the Art Gallery. There was brie, there were olives and blue chips and the hoi polloi of Ithaca's art world.
The art trail itself is two open studio weekends, the next two weekends, where thousands of brochures have been passed out with maps and directions for folks to visit artist studios throughout the county. Hopefully those visitors stuff their wallets before they set out and buy loads of pots.
So, the opening party was last night. I had planned to get dressed nicely, maybe even comb my hair, but I was busy making things and I see this picture and realize I look remarkably scruffy. If I didn't have the nametag on, you would think I was some free loader off the streets looking for cocktail snacks.
As it was, many nice people grabbed me and chatted about pottery and piggies, and it was a typical opening, and people always seem to get a kick out of pottery and piggies, esp. when the other artists' pots are overpriced ugly brown vases. Did I just say that?

Honestly, you look like an artist who's not afraid to get his hands dirty. I don't identfy with pretentious people. And a $3200 teapot?! Who, in his right mind, would buy that, especially when people can barely afford to gas up their cars or put food on the table. Madness!
I'll take a Gary Rith original any time! (I'm still making my Christmas list!)

Linda, it is some strange bug on your blog! I have reloaded the info many times!
I was scruffy because I was running very late working and decided I didn't care a fig, had to pick up the missus, who was dressed beautifully, and SURE it does fit that BAD BOY artist image: covered with clay.
I don't see any takers on the hot oil .....
Congrats on the opening Gary! And I hope all your studio visitors bring loads of cash and buy, buy, buy! Let me know how the hot oil thing goes!
How cool! Your pottery looks great in that top picture and you look like a hard working artist, which you are, so I think that's perfect.

hahaha! I know what you mean. I was looking at teabowls this morning on ebay, and spotted one that was $15,000. It wasn't an antique, it wasn't pretty, it was just kind of weird. Not even special weird. Just weird, and $15,000.

Well, now I've got my own man to give massages, but I wouldn't mind plenty of Gary Rith pottery!
Was at an arts & crafts show yesterday, picked up the card of some other pottery guy from NY, and walked away thinking your stuff is WAY BETTER. He did have a beautiful glaze that reminded me of coffee au lait (I took a photo for you) but that's all he had going for him. Your stuff has whimsy and personality and class. Whoot!
Fine! I'll order the massage.. but I'll donate it to Mrs. Pottersblog. :) Good therapy for your hands too.
