The pottery challenge: get up!

So I watch my pal Ron throwing cups in various videos and he's really quick (lower video, and he has more on his blog) and then I dream this: "HA! Ron throws a cup in a minute and a half? I can throw a cup in less than 60 seconds!!!" and you know I have to wake up and make a video of myself making a simple cup in less than 60 seconds. Nope. Although Ron uses a kick wheel, I use a fast electric, but it still takes me 1:31. :)

I find it interesting to compare our techniques. Hard to believe there are so many ways to basically make the same thing.

Good fun there Gary. That little "ha!" there at the end made me laugh.

The strange thing is Gary your method looked quicker even if it wasn't!

You still rocked it!

You're system looks so smooth and I will add that your rim is more even. It might be because your technique is not influenced by the foot kicking the spinning table.

That's just an opinion from a Happy Gal who knows nothing about clay other than play dough! LOL!

Thanks to both of y'all for sharing -- there is just something about watching the clay develop in front of the eyes. ;-)

I'd say you are dead even at 1:30. Small things might add seconds, like reaching for the sponge and wetting it, the amount of time you spend with a rib, or smoothing the lip. It probably only makes a difference when you sit down and make 50 of them anyway. So, new challenge, Ron, Gary, how long does it take to make 50 mugs? :)

50 mugs? What if I don't feel like it? How about 7 weeks?

So what is this? Gary and Ron throw down ...a pot?

They are fun to watch. Wish I could do that. It looks very relaxing.

And this is what I watched instead of making supper.
Tons more enjoyable than making supper, too!

Now I'm wondering if your choice of music has anything to do with your styles or your speed?

Fascinating, spellbinding, magical! What is there about watching a skilled potter coaxing something wonderful out of a blob of squishy clay, I wonder? About the only thing that comes to mind is doing it yourself! Fun comparison of techniques, Gary, as well. I really enjoyed both of those demos! Thanks!!!

Very cool to watch you create.

50 mugs? Yeah, 7 weeks sounds about right.
Gary's rim isn't wobbly b.c. he's more centered than I am.

I am glad to have many loyal visitors. But keep in mind, Ron is my pal and his style is just a bit different--and isn't it cool that he rolled 2 cups off in 3 minutes, and doesn't use lifters?

Very neat!
