true story!
(wiki piki, downy woodpecker female)
So last night me and the missus have that late evening walk in the late golden sunshine and upon returning home hear that distinct hammering on a dead tree next door. Up high I see a woodpecker (there is woods and a river behind the house, it is very wild). I point it out to the missus and she spies it and says, quite correctly,
"Oh! I wonder what kind of woodpecker it is, it doesn't have the usual red on its head, just black and white stripes". And I tell her
"It's a referee woodpecker".
And she says "Oh good, now I know!" and we go inside and I start laughing so hard and you see the light dawn on my wife's intelligent face
"I guess I walked right into that one, didn't I?"
Sweetie: it is a cute female downy woodpecker. We'll call it the Ref for short.

She should really know better by now, huh? We have a couple of types of woodpeckers that frequent our trees, and that's one of them. They're cuties.
It all hinges on keeping a straight face, doesn't it? ;-)
My husband used to do this to me all the time. It made me so mad! Now I hardly ever believe him.
The problem is, he has a birding book and when it comes to birds, he's usually right.
You have to love birds, don't you? These days they are all so excited, singing and calling and loving and flying!
Bwah!
I love birds! And as for that time of day... when the sun is setting... we always call it the "rosy glow" time of day.
Oh, I love all the birds, that one is real cute.
Hoop is always doing that to me. I'm either really gullible or he's really good at lying. I hope it's the first one. :)
You are so wrong for that! Sounds like something Greg would say to me and something I would believe, because he told me. Lol.
very nice - isn't it fun when they come to visit?
