Le bachelor: hour number 24 and five Friday favorites, birds!

Lynda's five Friday favorites game is BIRDS this week. Man, do I love birds and we have so many. There is a river and a large section of woods behind our house so we get a zillion new birds every week, passing through or living here.
When we lived in New Hampshire they told you on the radio to stop feeding birds on April 1, otherwise bears would become a nuisance. I feed birds year round now, and all winter long we have had so many cardinals! It is so cold and grey for half the year, do you know how much I love my cardinal families? You will see the males these days getting a sunflower seed and passing it to his missus, tres sweet! Plus lately we have flocks of goldfinches, pictured here with that little cretin the chipmunk who bedevils me all year long (I think one of his houses is in MY HOUSE). We also have a series of 4 wooden birdhouses out there, occupied by one wren family and maybe some others on the other side of the yard, plus, for the sake of color I like blue jays (crabby birds, though) and all the orange robins. So much color in summer!

Penny and I have been hiking. There were many fat woodchucks to bark at.

Gary, the chipmunk is the best! I know, not a bird, but still... we don't have chipmunks here :)

Or woodchucks,either...

We get your goldfinches and wrens in the winter, but they are not colorful then... just tiny and brown. Nice to see them prettied up :)

Goldfinches!! they're like magic. We have some in our mountains, and when I see them it's like - AHHHHH!

You guys have that ornithology center out there east of town, don't you? I seem to remember...

I live right by the lab of ornithology and I was there yesterday! There were a million goose and duck families all over!

Iowa is infiltrating your life in bird form!
The goldfinch (as you probably know) is our state bird.

I like the bird houses, but especially - love that last picture - vibrant colors and great shot of your dog!

I love that you have little bird families in your yard : ). That is the sweetest : ). I never heard about only feeding birds a few months a year? Crazy!

That's awesome that you have a bird sanctuary in your backyard. We sit out on the deck sometimes and try to figure out all the different birds... it's impossible, but still fun to do. :)

That is soooo very cool! I would love to have that many birds to see out of my back yard. I was amazed to see the many different birds I had not seen in our bay. We went to The National Seashore and besides my favorite Brown Pelican, white cranes, and the sandpipeers; they had many other birds that I, and could not name! Next time we go I have got to pick up some literature so I can learn those birds names!
PS: Great picture of Penny and your lovely flowers!

If you'd like a couple more of those little animal vacuum cleaners, namely those cute little chipmunks, I'd be happy to contriibute a few. Every time I put out fresh seeds they're johnny on the spot, selectively slurping into their little cheek pouches as many sunflower seeds as they can carry. I try not to begrudge 'em too much. I know THEY have mouths to feed, too. If they just weren't so blatant AND so fast! They give Momma Kitty major fits.

I'm loving my bird feeders too. You do begin to notice such endearing acts like you mentioned about the cardinal couple.
