another one lost to the dark side


In the mid-90s I taught at a boarding high school in Massacusetts, both English and pottery. My top pottery student was something else, really good and I imagined him making gorgeous pots and living in genteel poverty like the rest of us.
No.
Just heard from him last night: he is a lawyer in one of NY city's largest law firms....

    Funny where life takes us, isn't it? I hope he is still making pottery, maybe as a hobby?

    Genteel poverty is for those who aren't paying on debt racked up by student loans (I imagine a few of those are needed to become a lawyer). Also, it is difficult to live in genteel poverty if one has a taste for the so-called "finer things" in life.

    My husband aspires to genteel poverty (he's counting the months) but it comes at a time when we will be sending our firstborn off to college. Perhaps SuperDad's interest in a stained glass hobby will be helpful?

    Well, pottery to lawyer, I don't imagine many would make that leap. I am sure he is using it as a hobby now and will go back to it full time eventually.

    Hey, give him time. Didn't you post a New Yorker article last week about a lawyer who gave it up to write fiction? (I know, I know, he had a wife to support abd believe in him, but still.)
